September 15, 2009 Morning Pages

Actually getting a few moments today to sit down and crank out a morning page. I really have to get back to this. Ever since starting the permanent day job, it's been really hard to get up any earlier to log entries. That either means I'm going to have to man-up and just wake earlier or start doing these at night. Thing about the morning pages is their supposed to be stream-of-consciousness thought first thing when you wake. But I suppose as long as I'm writing it doesn't really matter what time I do it. So this will serve as a written notice that I'm going to try to do this. I was blogging nearly daily before I went permanent at the jobby-job. I miss it.

There's a lot happening; the most significant of which I have to keep a tight lid on. Suffice it to say: I have a HUUUUUUUUUGE secret I'm sitting on right now and have to wait a little while before I can blow the lid off of it. All I can say is that it's big. Monumentally big. Biggest-thing-I've-done-kinda-big.

You know, I'm normally good with secrets. This one's going to be hard, personally, to keep.

On other fronts, things are proceeding apace. Had a decent enough gig the other day in Redondo. I actually blew my voice out for the first time in years, which was a disappointment. Gonna chalk it up to the fact that I was on vacation for a good week or so before and just haven't been practicing. That'll change this week. I guess this was a warning that I'm not getting any younger and I need to keep my pipes in tip-top condition. Looks like daily vocal exercises like back in school.

Put the horn through her paces for the first time since I got her overhauled. She works pretty good overall, but there's something dicey going on in the upper register, particularly the altissimo fingerings. Going to have to call the shop today and see if I can get it back in for some fine-tuning. Let's hope they stand behind their work.

I'm really looking forward to getting the remixes from some of the people I've been talking to. It sounds like I'll be getting 3 remixes of “Granted” from Mr. Fresh. He's been really fantastic in keeping me updated. We're planning some fun things for the release. Also really psyched to hear what Big LA Todd is going to do with “Thinkin' Bout You.” I've been thinking about approaching some other DJ's that I've been enjoying remixes from. Speaking of which, I suppose it's time to post some links of some of the music podcasts that I've been checking on a regular basis.

My best advice is to pay attention to my Twitter feed. Every day I stumble upon to a great podcast or mixtape. It keeps me sane at work being able to at least feed my ears with something new. These, on top of Adam Carolla and Frosty, Heidi and Frank keep me entertained most days.

So, the band has learned almost 7 songs of the new material. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get them in a rehearsal room lately because we've been playing so many gigs. I'm gonna have to take a couple Saturday's off so we can knuckle this material down.

Speaking of which, we're going to be at the Starboard Attitude in Redondo Beach for the next few weekends. Specifically, this Sat, the 19th from 4-8PM; the very next Saturday, the 26th from 4-8PM; and the next Friday, Oct 2 from 9-1:30. Should be a great time as always, and I'll try to whip out a few surprises. Last Friday we even played a little “stump the band.” And yes, we pulled off G'n'R and Bobby Brown off the cuff. We're just that dangerous.

Lots more going on, but I'm going to wrap it up for now. More later.
